Browser security requirements

The New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) will shortly upgrade the security protocols that protect our state government websites. This will provide the security necessary to prevent the interception of data over the Web.

After the upgrade, you must use a Web browser with the most current browser security to access content and applications on all state government websites, including this Tax Department website and our Online Services.

The following Web browsers meet New York State's browser security requirements:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 (on Windows 7)
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Google Chrome 30
  • Mozilla Firefox 27
  • Apple Safari 7
  • Opera

  1. Visit https://encryption.ny.gov/ from any device you use to access our website or Online Services.
  2. If you receive a success message, you’re all set! You don’t need to take any further action.
  3. If you receive a message saying you need to upgrade your browser, you need to either adjust your settings or upgrade your browser to a newer, more secure version.
  • If you are using one of the following compatible browsers but receive the upgrade your browser message, see Web Browser Update Instructions to adjust your settings. When finished, visit https://encryption.ny.gov again to confirm your browser’s security.
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 (on Windows 7)
    • Microsoft Edge
    • Google Chrome 30
    • Mozilla Firefox 27
    • Opera
    • Apple Safari 7

  • If you are using an earlier version of the browsers listed above, you must upgrade your browser to at least the version shown. When you have completed your upgrade, visit https://encryption.ny.gov again to confirm your browser’s security.
