Direct File

New York State and the IRS have developed a new program that allows eligible New Yorkers to e-file their federal and state personal income tax returns for free. The Direct File pilot program is open to New Yorkers reporting certain types of income and claiming certain credits and adjustments.

The Direct File program is easy to use and can help eligible taxpayers:

  • file a 2023 federal tax return—for free—in English or Spanish
  • add tax information with step-by-step guidance
  • connect with real-time online support from IRS customer service representatives

You can access Direct File from your smartphone, laptop, tablet, or desktop computer.

You may be eligible for Direct File if:

  • you were a resident of New York State for the whole tax year
  • you have a simpler return, such as income from wages only
  • you claim the standard deduction
  • you claim only the most common tax credits

If so, Direct File might be right for you.
