Direct File, a new tax filing system developed by the Internal Revenue Service and the State of New York, opens tomorrow, March 12th, to all eligible New Yorkers.
The pilot program allows taxpayers reporting certain types of income and claiming certain credits and adjustments to file their federal and state taxes for free.
“This new system may be the future of tax filing – offering a simple, free way to file your federal and state tax returns directly with the government, ” said Acting Tax Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “In this first year of the program, it’s for those with relatively simple returns. I urge people to check to see whether it’s right for them.”
Hiller added that as the IRS and the State continue to build out the program, more taxpayers will be eligible to participate.
