New York State is pleased to have been one of the few states where the Direct File program was piloted last year.
Based in part on our success, the IRS is expanding the program. They are adding additional states and broadening eligibility for the new filing season.
In New York, we are continuing as a participating Direct File state. We’re assuming operational control of the program from our technology partner, Code for America, who we commend for helping with development in the first year. We’re also working on program expansion—adding tax credits and types of income that will be covered and making further improvements in the customer experience. Details of our expanded program will be announced soon.
We continue to believe that Direct File is the future of tax filing—providing an easy-to-use option for people to file their taxes directly with the state and federal government for free.
