The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance today encouraged eligible New Yorkers to take advantage of its free Taxpayer Assistance Program. Certified NYS Tax Department staff will guide eligible taxpayers as they electronically prepare and file their basic federal and state tax returns themselves for free.

Taxpayers with federal adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less, and investment income of $11,600 or less, qualify for assistance through the Taxpayer Assistance Program.

The Taxpayer Assistance Program is available at two locations in Genesee County:

  • Genesee Community College (Fridays, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm).
To register for a session, please visit the Taxpayer Assistance Program on the Tax Department website at www.tax.ny.gov/tap.
  • Richmond Memorial Library (Thursdays, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm).
To register for a session, please call 585-343-9550 (ext 3).
  • Byron-Bergen Public Library (Tuesdays, March 18 and April 1, 11:00 am - 6:30 pm).

“Our free Taxpayer Assistance Program provides a simple and safe way for eligible taxpayers to get help electronically preparing and filing their federal and state tax returns,” said New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “This useful program helps taxpayers file on their own and save on tax preparation costs.”

To participate in the Taxpayer Assistance Program filing, you must have:

  • basic computer skills
  • an active e-mail account
  • all your income tax documents
  • a copy of your 2023 tax return (if you filed)

If taxpayers are not eligible to participate in the Taxpayer Assistance Program, they may qualify for other free options to prepare and e-file their basic federal and state income tax returns.

Direct File

New York State Direct File is a free, easy-to-use e-file option for eligible taxpayers that can be accessed from a smartphone, laptop, tablet, or desktop computer.

Taxpayers with 2024 wages less than $200,000 – or $250,000 if filing jointly – may qualify. To check eligibility, go to New York eligibility for Direct File.

Free File

Taxpayers may be eligible to use Free File software to e-file federal and state income tax returns at no cost through the Tax Department website.

Information about Free File is available in multiple languages.

Other e-filing options

Taxpayers who don't qualify for Direct File or Free File may be eligible for other free filing options. See other e-file options for personal income tax to learn more.
